How do anti-wrinkle injections work

Botox targets one of the underlying causes of wrinkles—the repeated muscle contractions from frowning, squinting and smiling over the years. Injecting these muscles with botox temporarily reduces muscle activity, producing a visible smoothing of fine lines and wrinkles.

What can I expect?

Patients may see improvements within 2-3 days of injection, but can take up to 2 weeks to reach full effect and results last up to 4 months. Anti-wrinkle injections tend to last longer if you continue to have the procedure repeated. Initially you may need to have the procedure repeated every 3-4 months to maintain the same results. Over time, most people find they can reduce this to every 4-6 months and still maintain the same appearance. The reason for this is that although the treatment has worn off, there will still be some reduction of muscle activity meaning it will take longer for lines to start forming again.

Possible side effects

Some people experience minor bruising at the injection sites. On occasion some clients experience headaches - they don't tend to last more than 24hrs and they can be treated with simple painkillers. A rare complication can be a droop of the eyelid - this generally wears off without treatment within about two weeks, and risk can be reduced by ensuring injection sites are anatomically accurate.
